GRANGE Park Golf Club enjoyed an inspired weekend.
On Friday they pipped Blundell's Hill to make it a hat-trick of titles in the Jubilee League.
And on they Sunday beat the best of Leasowe and Wallasey to take the Triangular Trophy.
Grange Park went into Friday's match one point behind Blundell's Hill and knowing that only a win would be good enough to overhaul their Billinge neighbours.
Houghwood, Alder Root and Standish had provided the other opposition in the five pairs, two-ball better ball league but Blundell's Hill looked likely champions after whitewashing Grange Park 5-0 at home and taking maximum points in subsequent fixtures.
Defeat at Houghwood in their penultimate fixture opened up the title race.
Mike Devenish, captain of the Grange Park team sent out single figure handicapper Anthony Langlois and practice ground 'resident' Bob Atherton to lead the way. Four hours later a two and one victory secured the first point on the board, soon to be followed by another from the big hitting Gary Forber and Bill Glover who stormed home six and five.
Gavin Brown and Alan Armstrong, Brian Cosley and Ron Cristopher and finally Mike Davenish and Bob Dunn all won (also 6 and 5) to complete the rout. Two days later Grange Park hosted the Triangular Trophy, an annual competition first staged in 1991 to commemorate their 100 years anniversary and that of Leasowe and Wallasey.
Grange Park have dominated the event ever since but last year lost out to Leasowe. This year, on home ground, they justified their position as strong favourites and won with the four best, better ball stableford scores, from the 12 pairs counting from: Tom Howard and Ken Fargher (43 points); Derek Riley and John Pimblett (40); Bill Glover and Bob Atherton (39) and Kevin Gill and Bill Hankin (39) for a team total of 161 points. Wallasey finished second on 159 points with Leasowe third on 150.
Sandwiched in between team success on Friday and Sunday was a major individual win in the Collins Cup for newcomer Damian Strett with 42 points off an 18 handicap. Four 39 points followed from David Jackson (20 handicap), Paul Lockley (12) and John Travis (11), who were respectively allocated second, third and fourth on card play-offs. John Clarke, off 13, was undoubtedly the unluckiest golfer of the week. The previous Saturday he led the Collins Cup with 41 points before lightening caused cancellation of the competition. This week he returned 38 points to finish seventh.
