EGIL Ostenstad believes Blackburn Rovers just need to strike it lucky as they head for Norwich tomorrow, struggling to find their feet in the First Division.

The Norwegian international, whose debut against Barnsley ended in frustration and disappointment, has no doubts that Brian Kidd has assembled a good-enough squad at Ewood Park to mount a successful promotion challenge.

But he is also aware that it will take a desperately-needed first win - even if it's a fortunate one - to kick-start a campaign which has opened with just one point from three matches.

And a hangover caused by Rovers' Premiership relegation pain is probably hampering the cause even more, according to the former Southampton striker, who says there is still plenty of time to put things right.

"It was very disappointing against Barnsley on Saturday," said Ostenstad. "I was hoping to start with a win.

"I think everybody expected us to win but we just didn't play well enough.

"The club could still be suffering from what happened last season.

"It's obvious that confidence is lacking.

"We just need to get a lucky win with a scrappy goal to get off the mark."

Ostenstad has been through relegation battles himself with Southampton - successfully!

But, while he knows they can leave mental scars, he stresses that comparisons are really impossible to make because of the differing circumstances at Ewood and The Dell. "I think the situation is very different because expectations at Blackburn are so much higher," he explained.

"You will never have that kind of pressure at Southampton, so it's difficult to compare.

"All we have to do is keep on working and believe things will change."

Time and patience are always in short supply.

But Ostenstad, who is one of the certain starters as he looks for his first Rovers go at Carrow Road tomorrow, says that time could be all it takes to turn things around.

For he has no doubts about the depth or quality of the squad that he was willing to step down from the Premiership to join.

"There are a few new players here and others coming back from long-term injuries," he said.

"When you look at the team, everybody would expect us to win every game and we expect that as well.

"In my first training session last week, we played a practice game and the quality was unbelievable compared to Southampton.

"There were two equal teams on the pitch.

"The quality is there, we just need to get that first win.

"And we have plenty of time."

That may well be true but the pressure will ease far more quickly once Rovers get a win behind them.
