THE impending release of a new film version of Terence Rattigan's The Winslow Boy will revive poignant memories for Stonyhurst College.
George Archer Shee, the Winslow Boy, attended the independent Catholic college near Hurst Green just before the First World War.
He had been expelled from the Osborne Naval College on false charges of stealing a five-shilling postal order and the fight to clear his name became a cause celebre throughout the land.
He enlisted at the outbreak of war and joined the South Staffs Regiment.
He was killed in the early stages of conflict and his name is listed on Stonyhurst College's war memorial.
His name is also inscribed on the Menem Gate in Ypres along with names of more than 50,000 soldiers.
