A FUN day with a Flintstones theme is to take place at a fascinating geological site on Saturday.

Bedrock's Clitheroe cousins, Fred Limestone and Barney Ribble, will make a guest appearance at the event at the town's Salthill Quarry from 2pm to 5pm.

Fred and Barney will hand out nature trail leaflets and unveil new signs at the quarry.

Face-painting will be on offer and experts will be at hand to lead wildflower walks, geology trails and bug hunts.

Parking and refreshments will be available at the nearby Salthill Industrial Estate, off Lincoln Way.

The event has been organised by the Lancashire Wildlife Trust, which manages the popular wildlife reserve.

Spokesman John Lamb said: "Salthill is one of the best geological sites in the British Isles and an important place for wildlife.

"The Lancashire Wildlife Trust wants people to understand, enjoy and appreciate the countryside and this open day is the start of a new project aimed at getting our message across."

The information boards and nature trail leaflets have been produced with cash from Castle Cement and English Nature.

The Lancashire Wildlife Trust manages 34 nature reserves and maintains biological records in the county, as well as providing advice on environmental matters.
