Nelson 3 Squires Gate 0
NELSON continued their good start to the season with a comfortable win over last season's championship contenders Squires Gate in the First North Western Trains League Second Division.
Gate made a promising start, but were given a lesson in finishing after 37 minutes when, following a good build-up, Mark Robinson found himself in the clear and unleashed a lethal right foot shot which gave goalkeeper Gareth Gray no chance.
Two minutes later the Blues doubled their lead when Jonathan Irvine teed-up a chance for Glen Little to drive the ball into the bottom corner of the net from 20 yards.
John Bailey's men felt they should have had a third goal on the stroke of half time, but Irvine's effort was disallowed by the referee for something no-one else in the ground had appeared to see.
The record was put straight after 60 minutes, though, when Robinson broke clear on the right of the penalty area and his low cross was coolly sidefooted home by Irvine at the far post.
Nelson's next game is on Saturday at home to Bacup Borough, kick off 3pm.
