ROSSSENDALE Harriers were top team at the 5.5 mile Golf Ball Fell Race last Wednesday.
Dave Lewis took victory by an 11 second margin to head the team, Mervyn Keys - returning to competition after three months absence through injury - was fifth, and Mark Aspinall finished eighth.
Martin Lee, although fourth, was a non-counter for the team as he has only recently joined the club. Keys was second veteran behind Bradford and Airedale runner Steve Oldfield, with Clayton's Geoff Gough third.
Bev McWade won the ladies race for Clayton, but Rossendale were first team thanks to Jean Rawlinson and Karen Taylor. Rossendale also had the winning junior, Chris White and the top over 50 in Ken Taylor. Ross Jacques of Clayton won the M60 category.
Dougie Aspden was the highest-placed West Pennine runner in the Woodend four-mile road race, the final event in the South Ribble Challenge. Dougie logged 23.45, Bernice Greenhalgh 30.26 and Peter Demaine 30.36. Bernice's sister Sheila Fogg returned 31.32. Brian Scully of Accrington RR was second over 60 in last weekend's Kendal Half Marathon, finishing ahead of former Blackburn Harrier Bill Atkinson in 1.37. Tony Bolton of Accrington recorded 1.36.
