RUBEROID Sutton faced a bank holiday programme that would give a clue as to whether they are title contenders or merely pretenders.
Prestatyn were the visitors to New Street on Saturday when Sutton won the toss and elected to bat and in a day that rewrote the club record books, SS Das attained the highest score ever recorded by a Sutton player reaching 139 not out in just 31 overs. Ably supported by Sean Anders 77 not out, Sutton declared at 233-1.
Patience was required by Sutton as Prestatyn set about attempting to survive the afternoon for almost 60 overs. A wily spell of off-spin bowling lured the batsmen into an array of mistakes that allowed Das to return figures of 6-50. A fine team effort ensured victory by 45 runs.
One Bank Holiday Monday 'Ruberoid' Sutton First XI travelled to Crosley to play St Marys College Old Boys. The home side were asked to bat and made hard work of it as they struggled to 81 all out. Suttons bowling attack was effective being led by Ian Greener returning 6 for 27.
In reply, Sutton made short work of the total finishing on 85-4 recording a six-wicket victory.
Last week Sutton Third XI played Earlestown in the West Lancs Sunday Final with the New Street club running out victorious. Earlestown batted first and amassed 185 all out, the highlight of the innings a stunning catch at point by Karl Gavin from the ever economical Dave Laithwaite ably supported by Dave Pye. Sutton never looked in doubt with a fine 97 from Joe Harvey. Sean Anders steering the side to victory with 41 not out. Sutton would like to thank this weekends sponsors R Baker Electrical and St Helens Roofing.
