LOCAL readers have attacked plans by Lancaster University to double the cost of using its library.
Although students and staff can use the Bailrigg library for free, local people who want to borrow books must pay a fee. Last year, the cost of borrowing was £25 - next year a library card will cost £60.
Library user Steve Booth now plans to lead a campaign against the new charges. He told the Citizen "A lot of people who have these tickets are elderly or unemployed."
According to Mr Booth, the costs have escalated from £5 in the early 90s. He now plans to launch a protest against the price hike with a public meeting and a possible demonstration outside the library. University spokeswoman Vicky Tyrell defended the price hike "The University reluctantly put up its price for full external membership of its library as the original price was artificially low and did not cover even the basic administration costs."
"Despite this, Lancaster University's library membership is still cheaper than many universities."
Concerned borrowers can contact Steve Booth on (01524) 752212.
