A BUSINESSMAN has slammed Blackburn's traffic system after an accident outside his company's headquarters.

The incident, involving two cars, happened at the junction of Canterbury Street and Byrom Street shortly after 4pm.

Police closed surrounding streets for around an hour while firefighters cut a driver free from her Citroen ZX.

The women was taken to hospital with minor injuries and the driver of the other car, a Ford Mondeo, was not hurt.

Paul, who runs 21st Century Alarms, said: "I have been here for more than seven years and lost count of the number of accidents we have had at this junction.

"The problem is the one way system which confuses people who don't know the area and end up driving in the wrong direction. I have complained to the police and the council and even asked for warning signs to be put up but no one has done anything about it.

"It is only a matter of time before someone is killed and I am just amazed there aren't more accidents.

"Nearly very time I look out of my window there are near misses and people driving the wrong way down the one-way system."

The accident happened just yards from Blackburn fire station and two crews were at the scene within seconds.

A spokesman said: "It appears the Ford Mondeo was travelling down Canterbury Street in the wrong direction and the woman in the Citroen was forced to swerve out the way.

"As a result, she collided into a lamp post and we had to cut her free."
