AN historic FA Cup Final medal is to go on show at Towneley Museum in Burnley.

The medal was presented to legendary Bert Freeman, scorer of the only goal in Burnley's Cup Final victory over Liverpool in 1914.

Among those at the handing over of the medal at Burnley Town Hall was Jimmy Robson, the only other Burnley player to score a goal in an FA Cup Final.

Jimmy's goal was the 100th FA Cup Final goal at Wembley but he was on the losing side as Burnley went down by 3-1 against Tottenham Hotspur.

Bert Freeman's medal was bought for £4,400 at a Christie's auction in Glasgow four years ago by Coun Harry Brooks, leader of the independent group on Burnley Council and a lifelong Clarets supporter.

He handed the medal over to the Mayor, Coun Eddie Fisk. It will now go on show at Towneley Hall. Burnley won the cup before a crowd of 72,000. It was the last final to be played at Crystal Palace and the first to be attended by a reigning monarch.

In a long and successful career Bert scored 225 goals in 369 matches. He played five times for England and made four appearances for the Football League.

Coun Brooks said he wanted the medal to be on permanent public display.

He added: "I bought the medal because I felt it belonged in Burnley and I would like people, especially our supporters, to be able to see it.

"The history of the club means a great deal to Burnley fans. If and when the proposed museum at Turf Moor becomes a reality a transfer to that museum might be possible.''
