FARMERS from East Lancashire will take part in a huge street market in the centre of Manchester tomorrow .

The city's Northern Quarter is to be turned over to farmers selling their produce direct to the public.

The number of farmers' markets has increased to 75 nationally in less than a year and the National Farmers' Union believes every town could soon have one.

They have proved a success at Asda in Colne since being launched monthly in July.

Four markets will take place in Manchester before Christmas at the Smithfield end of High Street.

They will include live entertainment and are expected to become a permanent feature.

Local producers selling their wares will include Kathleen Rigg, of Gregson's Farm, Samlesbury, with her farmhouse fudge, and Kevin Taylor, of Roberts House Farm, Osbaldeston, who sells ostrich meat.

Kathleen Rigg said she thought the markets were a brilliant idea and could prove a lasting success.

She said: "We are looking forward to the Manchester market.

"We have taken part in one in Chester, which was great. Given time, I think the markets could really take off. Customers really enjoy buying direct from producers."

A farmers' market will also be held at the Colne Asda store from 10am to 5pm on September 25 and 26.
