LANCASHIRE County Council has committed itself to supplying the best education for children with special needs.

The council was facing an overspend of £180,000 per month, due to an increase in the number of pupils identified with special needs.

The problem was brought up at a meeting of the 3E's Education Working Group where councillors discussed provision for the children.

County councillor John Fillis, deputy chairman of the education and cultural services committee, said: "We are working closely with schools to ensure best-value quality provision for all Lancashire pupils.

"The LEA will further delegate funds to schools and provide better services for special educational needs at less cost.

"We are also committed to further developing our inclusive approach which enables children's needs to be fully met as near to home as possible and alongside their friends.

"Lancashire has an outstanding record of commitment to special educational needs provision."
