SUTTON claimed their third victory in a row when they defeated Port Sunlight at New Street on Saturday.
On a glorious day, Port Sunlight won the toss and elected to bat.
But they made heavy weather of it. And running into a Ray Foster at the top of his form, Port Sunlight slumped to 107 all out. Foster returned figures of 7-42.
On what should have been a formality Sutton stuttered from 24-0 to 28-5, showing nervous twitches. However, a solid sixth wicket stand between Darren Hockenhull (37) and Steven Wearden (31 not out) steadied the ship allowing the chirpy Stuart Toole to knock the victory runs at 111- 6, a four wicket victory.
The Second XI visited the Wirral for an enthralling game. Batting first Port Sunlight posted a total of 180-9 declared. The only calibre bowling on display was the recalled Dave Laithwaite superbly returning 6 for 44 in a devastating spell.
Sutton lost opener Brian Wearden early and it was left to Luke Tunstall to blast the majority of the runs, in an excellent knock of 81. He was ably supported by Phil Kelly (20), Mark Reynolds (15) and a lengthy steady knock of 28 by Steve Burrows, who had the pleasure of hitting the winning runs.
Sutton Third XI toiled in the heat on Sunday, with Leigh massing 268-4. Martin Bromiley returning 3 for 25. Sutton collapsed in reply and were bowled out for a feeble 113. The only resistance offered by Steve Moss who was 26 not out.
