A BAN on drinking alcohol in the streets could get the go ahead if the city council's Independent group get their way.

The Morecambe Bay Independents say they are determined to fulfil their election promise to tackle threatening and abusive behaviour by certain groups.

They see a street alcohol ban as one way of clamping down on rowdy behaviour across the district

Similar bans have recently been established in Kendal and Blackpool and have proved to be successful in reducing anti-social behaviour.

"We want to put out the message quite clearly that enough is enough, " said Cllr Tricia Heath. "Local people are sick and tired of unruly and threatening behaviour by a small minority spoiling everyday events. Similar proposals were put forward by our group several years ago but were defeated in council by the Labour majority. In May people clearly voted for a change of attitudes and we fully intend to act upon their wishes."

The ban would come into effect for the next summer season but would not include beer gardens or licensed forecourts.

In the meantime a public consultation will take place so local people can put forward their thoughts on which areas should be covered.

The ban is supported by the police, who have been monitoring the effects of similar schemes in Kendal and Blackpool.

Said Cllr Mark Turner: "We acknowledge that the by-law will not be a total solution to rowdy behaviour but the message is quite clear, such behaviour will no longer be tolerated."

Cllr Geoff Wilson added: "Surveys are now taking place and we would welcome any comments from members of the public and local organisations."

The proposals will go to council for approval before being submitted to the Home Office.

Any comments should be sent to Cllr Tricia Heath, c/o Morecambe Town Hall.
