A GREEN fingered super grower turned over the opposition at Tyldesley Allotments' Association's second show.
Gardener J Salisbury's giant vegetables helped him to 34 first places, 13 seconds and a collection of seven top awards at the annual open vegetable and flower show at the Tyldesley Arms.
His 21lb super cabbage lifted the Garden News Plaque, while his six and a half pound onion helped him to add the Championship Cup, Founder Members' Cup, T E Gilman Cup, Blue Ribbon Certificate of Merit, National Vegetable Silver Medal for best red cabbage and Bronze Medal for the best vase of 3" decorative dahlias to his haul of trophies.
Other outstanding achievements included a 13ft 2in sunflower grown by 13-years-old Hayley Whyte.
For B Ryder this was his 50th show.
D Holmes won the Greenalls Rose Bowl for the best vase of gladioli and the NDS silver medal for the best vase of 3" dahlia cacti.
Mrs L Aldred scooped the honours for the best vase of 12 sweet peas.
The top allotment prize, the Roy Shaw Cup, for the best patch was presented to Graham Griffiths by the late Roy's wife, Barbara.
Runner-up in this category was Mr I G Whyte and certificates of merit were awarded to Mr E Jones, Mrs Owen and Mrs McGrath.
After the judging of the 250 entries by Mr Alf Yates the vegetables and flowers were auctioned off.
Proceeds will go to the children's Christmas party.
The remaining vegetables were donated to Tyldesley's Park House and other local pensioners' homes.
Allotment secretary, Mr Thomas Patrick, has announced that there are a few vacant plots available for enthusiastic gardeners. Anyone interested should contact him at 13, Shakerley Road, Tyldesley.
