A DAM that's been neglected for years is to be given a whole new look.
St Helens Council planners have approved a major Groundwork Trust scheme for Thatto Heath Dam.
It also envisages incorporating part of the garden areas of council-owned properties in Thackray Road, Southey Road and Dickens Road.
There will be a new way in from Thatto Heath Road with an information board, new gravel footpaths and a boardwalk with fishing platforms and safety rails.
There will also be a programme of wetland and native wild flower planting and the provision of new fencing to the majority of the site.
Household waste and other illegally-tipped material will be removed and some of the scrub will be thinned or cleared.
The committee heard that the site - owned by the council - has been neglected for many years and existing footpaths and fishing platforms are in a dilapidated condition.
A 25-year management plan is being drawn up for the site and will involve the local community, anglers, representatives from colleges and schools, Pathways, the local authority and Groundwork Trust.
Council leader Marie Rimmer told the committee: "This will be a very useful facility, particularly for our young people and disabled people who like to go fishing."
