LANCASHIRE have made an informal approach to Wasim Akram to be their coach next season. But while the Pakistan star, just cleared of match fixing allegations, would love to return to Old Trafford, his new career as a TV commentator could make it impossible.

Channel Four used him extensively during the Test series and want him again next summer for the visits of West Indies and Zimbabwe. Lancashire, however, have put him on a short list which also includes Geoff Marsh, who quit as Australia's coach recently.

Wasim, who has been reinstated as Pakistan's captain and was flying to Canada today for a one day tournament, finished his 10 years playing career at Old Trafford last year when he led them to the verge of a unique treble.

He has kept his home in Altrincham and has nursed an ambition to return to Old Trafford in some capacity. Lancashire are in no rush to fill the gap left by Dav Whatmore, having seen their ploy of handing more responsibility to captain John Crawley work perfectly.

But chairman Jack Simmons promised: "There will definitely be a new coach in place for next season." They could consider using Wasim on a part time basis, fitted around his TV duties.
