THE daughter of a pensioner who was targeted by a bogus caller has spoken of her anger at the callous crime.

The pensioner, aged 71, from Brandy House Brow, Blackbburn, fell victim to the raider on Tuesday lunchtime. Police have now issued another warning to the elderly not to allow strangers into their homes.

The victim's daughter, who did not want to be identified, said: "My mother has been left very shaken and upset by what happened. I have warned her about not letting people into her home, but this man bullied his way into my mother's house.

"It happened minutes after my father went to the shop for a newspaper and I am sure they were watching the house. I cannot believe that someone would steal from an old lady like this. Whoever did this must have no conscience at all."

The man was posing as a water board official and told the pensioner she was about to be cut off. He ordered her to fill pans with water and, while she was busy, stole a purse containing bank cards and cash. Detective Inspector Bob Eastwood, of Blackburn CID, said: "We have had a number of these types of offences in recent months. People should not let any strangers into their homes and if in any doubt they should contact the company they claim to be from."

"These types of offenders prey on the elderly and vulnerable and we are very keen to hear from anyone who may have information which could help with our inquiries."

The thief was white, in his early 20s, around 5ft 6in, with a stubbly beard, short brown hair and was wearing a navy blue sweat shirt.

It is believed he was with a second man who acted as lookout outside the house.

Anyone with information should contact Blackburn CID on 01254 51212 or the Crimestoppers line on 0800 555111.
