A COUNTY council run initiative has been launched to produce a comprehensive sports guide for young disabled athletes.

The Coordinated Service for Learning Support was launched at County Hall this month with the ultimate aim of recording every sports club or organisation in East Lancashire that provides a service.

Peter Harris has been given the task of compiling the directory which he will be able to call upon to help disabled children who want to get involved in extra curricular sporting activities.

He said: "There are a lot of children with physical difficulties or learning problems who are potentially very good athletes but they are not getting the chance they deserve.

"My job is not only to help compile this comprehensive list but also work closely with schools on how they can improve the sporting activities they provide to children with these difficulties.

"I know that schools are doing the best to include children in a wide range of sports but sometimes it can be difficult and the children can get left out." Mr Harris said that he is available to visit schools across East Lancashire and pass on advice and support regarding PE and games and also help in ways schools can apply for funding for specialised equipment.

He added: "There are a lot of events that have been held in East Lancashire for disabled children which I think is wonderful. But what I want to do is compile this list where children can go to train or compete every day of the week if they want to.

"I was contacted by a mother this week who wanted to find out where she could get either a swimming or riding instructor for her very keen son who is confined to a wheelchair.

"These problems seem to occur all the time but with a little bit of work can easily be rectified."

Mr Harris is now asking all sports clubs, groups or organisations to get in contact with him to help compile his directory.
