THE Conservative Group Leader Councillor D. M. Higgin's tortuous and incomprehensible letter (Bury Times, September 10) exemplifies the Tory's confused education policy and his lack of understanding of the present Government's clear priorities ie: to offer all pupils an excellent education and to raise standards for all pupils irrespective of their ability, domestic circumstances or geographical location.

Contrary to his assumption, comprehensive schools do not "deny children with a high ability the opportunity to improve themselves". They do make all their pupils "aware of their ability and the opportunities that are open to them." The Labour Government is carrying out its education manifesto of which, as a politician, Coun Higgin should be well aware. At the last election the Government was given overwhelming support for the policies which it is now rigorously pursuing for the benefit of all pupils.

His glib reference to the "presentation of a petition signed by 20 per cent of eligible parents", denigrates the democratic process. He does not seem to understand that this policy applies to local authority maintained grammar schools in Labour-controlled Trafford, and a diminutive number of other local authorities. Private schools like the Bury Grammar Schools are not affected by this legislation.

The Bury LEA maintains some excellent comprehensive high schools which deserve the full support of all local councillors. They should not be used as political footballs by disgruntled minority politicians.
