STUDENTS and staff at Carmel College have been mourning the tragic death of popular student Jamie Eckley.

The 17-year-old, whose ambition was to be a solicitor, died after being in collision with a car on the Manchester-bound carriageway of the East Lancashire Road at about 10.30pm on Friday, September 10. He was on his way home to Eccleston after celebrating a friend's 18th birthday.

Rob Peacock, deputy principal at the college, told the Star: "The whole college community was shocked and saddened by Jamie's sudden death. He was a popular and cheerful student and was respected and liked by all students and tutors.

"Jamie was a hardworking young man who was doing A levels in four subjects and who had a bright future ahead of him.

"We will find it difficult to come to terms with this tragic loss. A mass was celebrated in college yesterday (Wednesday) to give thanks for Jamie's life and to pray for his family and friends. Our thoughts and prayers go out to them at this difficult time." Too distressed to talk about their loss, Jamie's devastated parents Dave and Karen issued an emotional statement to the Star. On behalf of their family and themselves, they said: "We all loved Jamie so much and were so proud to be his family. Jamie gave us so much in 17 years - more than a lot of people get in a lifetime. And we feel so lucky and privileged to be a part of his life."

Jamie's girlfriend Emma, a student at Winstanley College, added: "Jamie was a special person who meant a lot to me, he always managed to make me laugh no matter what. He was the most kind and caring person I know. I miss him greatly, but I've always got the memories of the brilliant time we spent together.

"He will always hold a place in my heart. And if I ever need to talk I know he will listen."

Jamie's funeral service will be held at St Thomas of Canterbury Church, Dentons Green Lane, tomorrow (Friday, September 17) at 2pm, followed by a service at St Helens Crematorium. Flowers to Hedges Funeral Services, Harris Street.
