MORECAMBE cricket fans delighted in the news that Morecambe professional Ashwell Prince has committed himself to the club for another season this week. Prince is 22 years old and is South African.
Meanwhile the gloom continued at Lancaster who failed to win at the weekend and finished the season in bottom place.
Lancaster 76-3
Leyland 139
RAIN spoiled Lancaster's chances of winning their last match of the season and moving off the bottom of the table.
In reply to Leyland's 139 runs David Heywood and Raj Hans gave Lancaster a solid start with a 53 runs partnership for the first wicket before the former was bowled by Paul Haydock for 15. Thirteen runs later Hans was caught by McDonnell off Haydock for an aggressive 45.
When Phil Dennison was caught by Mark Swan off Paul Haydock for four the rain drove the players from the field, never to return. Alex Mutucum Arana was undefeated with five but it was too late.
Leyland DAF
124 Morecambe 154
MORECAMBE ended their season with a 30 runs victory over Leyland at Sandy Lane.
They got a dreadful start and were reeling at 23-4, but captain Phil Thornton and Andrew Mashiter restored the balance with a fifth wicket partnership of 85. Defending their score Morecambe's opening pace bowlers Peter Stephens and Gareth Pedder ripped out the early Leyland Daf batting. Leyland stabilised but then Gulam Maje produced a superb spell of bowling to take 5-21 from 7.3 consecutive overs to see Morecambe home.
