ONE of Bury's busiest junctions will be plunged into darkness after a street light safety scare.
Some 40 lampposts will be replaced at the Bolton Street/Crostons Road junction after high-tech ultrasonic checks.
Council chiefs say the move was in response to a national scare, but stressed there was no immediate danger to the public.
Borough engineer Mike Cannon explained: "Street lights made by one particular company were highlighted as being prone to corrosion. We identified those in the borough and will now change them."
A phased maintenance programme has already started. The lighting columns will be removed within days before new ones are put in.
The work will leave the area in darkness for the next three to four weeks, and road users are being urged to slow down and take extra care.
