THE final day of the popular Open Mixed Doubles, sponsored by Red Rose Reprographics, completed a busy weekend of events at Ighten Mount Bowling Club.
Newly crowned champions Reg and Sylvia Smith deservedly won the competition following two comprehensive successes on finals day.
In the semi-final they met their namesakes Brian and Barbara Smith, who had played well in qualifying heats the previous week.
The latter began extremely well and in a seven-break that included a full house four-pointer, they led 10-3.
But Reg and Sylvia cut back the deficit and while Brian and Barbara still held the advantage at 14-10, the pattern of the game was soon to change.
Two three-pointers either side of a brace swept the champions into the lead, and three ends later, they were home and dry 21-15.
In the final with Roger and Mavis Hancock, it was a different story as Reg and Sylvia took command of affairs from the opening end.
After just four ends they swept 12-5 in front, and seven ends later at 16-8, were on course for victory.
A further four-break put them further ahead and apart from conceding a couple of singles, completed the triumph 21-10.
Mavis and Roger played their best bowls in the semi-final with Steve and Ann Crossley, who were given few opportunities after a level start at 5-5.
Steve and Ann scored in three of the last four ends but it was not enough to prevent Mavis and Roger, who finished with a four-pointer from winning in style 21-11.
