HOLCOMBE Hill will see the start of Bury's Year 2000 celebrations, with the lighting of a millennium beacon
The fire will be lit at Peel Tower at 10pm on New Year's Eve.
The plan has the backing of Bury Council, the government's Millennium Beacon Commission, local MP David Chaytor, together with many local churches and community groups.
Now the search is on in other parts of the borough for volunteers to host their own Millennium Beacon event. The Peel Tower event will involve a torch-lit procession up the hill starting from Holcombe Emmanuel Church at 9.30pm.
It is hoped the lighting of the beacon will be greeted by the ringing of church bells and firework displays, and the lighting of other beacons all over Bury.
A meeting will take place next Thursday, September 23, for those interested in taking part in the event or organising their own Millennium Beacon celebration. The venue is Ramsbottom Cricket Club, starting at 7.30pm.
Those who cannot attend the meeting but want to know more should contact Louise Nandy on 01706 82 8054.
