A TRAFFIC policeman, who attended the scene of a tragic accident in which a 19-year-old man was killed, has called for a 50mph speed limit on the East Lancashire Road.
Brian Byrnes from Penryn Avenue, Laffak, died after he was in collision with a car as he tried to cross the busy dual carriageway at its junction with Green Leach Lane, Carr Mill, on October 22 last year.
At an inquest into Brian's death, held at St Helens Hospital this week, the coroner ruled a verdict of accidental death, but requested that a transcript of the court proceedings, including the recommendations for the road, be sent to St Helens Council.
The main recommendation put forward by Constable Michael Terry, who helped to compile the accident report, was that a speed limit of 50mph be imposed along the entire East Lancashire Road. He also recommended that the pedestrian lights at the junction with Green Leach Lane - the scene of the accident - be phased to help pedestrians cross; that the lighting on that section of the road be altered to improve visibility; and that screening be installed on the central reservation of the road to stop pedestrians being dazzled by oncoming vehicles.
After the inquest Brian's dad, Peter, said: "We welcome the recommendations put forward by Constable Terry and hope that the council will look closely at them."
