A LIST of potential housing sites in Pendle, many of them controversial, will go before councillors.

Residents' groups opposed to the developments are expected to pack the council chamber at Nelson Town Hall on Tuesday to hear what is expected to be a stormy debate over the future of the 13 sites being recommended by senior planners.

They are: land off Clitheroe Road, Brierfield; part of Lucas sports ground, Reedley; Salterforth Road, North Holme, Earby; Lenches, Colne; Southfield Street, Nelson; Gib Hill, Nelson and Colne; Windy Bank, Colne; Westgate/Calf Hall Lane, Barnoldswick; George Street, Barnoldswick; Johnson and Johnson site, New Road, Earby; Groves Hotel, Manchester Road, Nelson; and Lambert's woodyard, Manchester Road, Nelson.

The sites, which were chosen from 31 possible areas, add up to more than the 33.5 hectares of housing land needed to meet demand from house-builders to 2006.

Gib Hill, Lenches and George Street are expected to be among the more controversial proposals.

Labour councillors want to earmark at least part of Gib Hill for a millennium woodland and residents have voiced their opposition to the other two sites.
