A PRIMARY school is preparing to go green for the Millennium - by celebrating its tenth birthday with a change in colours!

Pupils at Westwood Road Primary School, in Clayton-le-Woods, have ditched their drab grey uniform in favour of emerald green in a bid to get their youngsters more involved with the environment.

The switch comes as the school marks its tenth birthday and reflects on an exciting 10 years, which have included being awarded 'beacon school' status by the Government and housing pupils from a nearby school after their's burnt down!

Headteacher John MacKenzie said: "Our school is set in beautiful surroundings, with woodlands, a lovely field and squirrels.

"We always wanted to use green but it just wasn't possible when we opened because there weren't many colours available and green was already being used be a nearby primary school.

"However we have found out that we can change now because more fashionable colours are available, and we have picked emerald green. The pupils and parents seem to prefer it and we are absolutely delighted we have been able to make this swap, because we see ourselves as very green-minded."

Since opening its doors in 1989, Westwood Road has grown rapidly as new estates spring up throughout the area.

When the school opened, it was planned to let numbers build up slowly. But within weeks of the start of their inaugural term they had a full house after nearby Manor Road County Primary School was damaged in a fire.
