CATERERS in Lancashire must now comply with new menu requirements by indicating the use of genetically modified foods in their meals.

The regulations came into force on Sunday, and apply to restaurants, canteens, cafes, pubs, take-away, selling ready-to-eat food.

Caterers using GM products in individual dishes can either state the ingredients on their menus or notice boards, including a general statement that a member of staff will provide further details.

A Lancashire County Council spokesman said: "Our Trading Standards service is helping traders to understand and comply with these regulations as quickly as possible.

"However, it is important that this information is clearly available to purchasers and the Trading Standards Department will not accept lack of staff training or ignorance of the products they buy as a continuing excuse for not updating their menus."
