PUPILS at Golborne High School are to serve up Friday delights for pensioners.

The award winning school is to launch a community based project to provide a luncheon club and an afternoon of activities for the elderly.

But setting up the scheme hit a snag.

The students realised they would have to provide suitable padded chairs, but the project management team found they could not afford them.

So enterprising year 11 pupil Vicki Littler appealed to Leigh Rotary Club who chipped in £500. Now thanks to them, and with support from Rhapsody Tours, the school has been able to buy 24 comfortable seats.

The Rotaract Club of Leigh, whose president is ex-pupil Steve Barker, has also promised a £250 donation.

The project will be managed by the children with teachers Annie and deputy head Fran Carrington taking advisory roles.

It will be run in partnership with the school's catering supervisor, Angela Soo, who already provides fresh home-cooked meals for other luncheon clubs in the area.

The school's plans won them a 1999-2001 Barclays New Futures Award to fund the scheme.

Annie Boate, head of PSE, who entered the national competition, said: "We are thrilled that our bid has been successful and we can finally put the students' plans into action and work with the community. This is real citizenship education."

Now the team wants to hear from anyone who could spare a couple of hours to help with supervision, entertainment or presentations.

And any pensioner who wants to book a place can contact Annie or Fran at school on 01942 726842 or e-mail ghs4lunch@hotmail.com
