EXCITING plans will breathe new life in to a 90 year-old landmark.

Atherton's imposing Ena Mill, which has lain idle since the mid 90s, is at the hub of Les Yates's business centre blueprint.

Successful businessman Mr Yates (pictured), who heads the QS Fashion group which has a branch in Bolton Road, Atherton, bought the five storey, listed building and its 3.5 acres for "a substantial sum" from Courtauld's.

He has revealed exclusively to The Journal how he plans to turn the mill in to Atherton Business Centre.

Storage and distribution, a bonded warehouse, light assembly and start-up units are included.

But, drawn to the area's industrial history, Mr Yates is also contemplating heritage centre possibilities.

He said: "The main mill covers 211,000 square feet and is a Grade Two listed building on a 3.5 acre site with lodge and chimney.

"We have started doing cosmetic work on the roof, downspouts and windows.

"Wigan Council are interested in the ideas we have for start-up units where people can set-up a business without putting their head in the noose of a lease agreement.

"But the mill layout with access from Flapper Fold Lane and Bag Lane is ideal for larger operations. The building has two very large goods lifts, a passenger lift, fully fitted offices and parking for 300-400 cars, is fully alarmed and has a watchman.

"The old engine house with its ornate plasterwork and tiles would make a great local heritage meeting place."

He believes the mill - built in 1909 - would be ideal for storing and displaying industrial machinery from a bygone age.

"We're hoping by next Spring to be marketing it," he said.
