GET it checked - that's the message to St Helens residents from The Stroke Association.

The national charity is urging people to get their blood pressure checked as part of Stroke Awareness Week, which runs from September 27 to October 3.

Checks in St Helens will take place at the Hardshaw Centre on Monday, September 27 to Saturday, October 2 from 10am to 4pm.

"It is estimated that some four out of 10 deaths due to strokes could be prevented if people with high blood pressure had it properly controlled," says Helen Lea-Smith for The Stroke Association.

"Everyone is at risk from having a stroke, and at the moment there are 100,000 cases of new strokes every year, with 10,000 of those people being under 55. We hope our campaign will help to reduce these numbers by encouraging more people to be aware of stroke and to take measures to prevent having one".
