BURNLEY MP Peter Pike, has welcomed progress being made for renal dialysis facilities in Lancashire, after receiving a letter from the Department of Health outlining the plans.

Work is proceeding to create an additional 15 dialysis stations at the Royal Preston Hospital, which are expected to be in use by spring 2000.

There will be a phased introduction because of the need to stage the take-on process and secure services of trained, specialist staff.

Mr Pike was told that discussions between the four participating health authorities and Preston Acute Hospitals NHS Trust were continuing and that Preston was acknowledged as both a specialist centre and a satellite unit.

Funding was identified, with £300,000 from the North West regional capital programme and £800,000 from the Preston Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.

Mr Pike said: "It is an issue I continue to press with East Lancashire Health Authority as well as the Minister."
