AN 81-year-old man is recovering in hospital today after his car set on fire at an East Lancashire beauty spot.
Joseph Heaton, of St James Road, Blackburn, suffered burns to his leg and face and was transferred from Blackburn Royal Infirmary to the specialist burns unit at the Royal Preston Hospital where he was today in a stable condition.
Mr Heaton was waiting in his Volkswagen Polo while his wife Mabel went for a walk in Marles Wood, Dinkley, on Saturday morning.
It is thought he was smoking a pipe which may have fallen on to the passenger seat, setting the vehicle on fire. Mr Heaton was pulled to safety by a passer-by, who police are anxious to trace.
