A COUPLE have launched a community footpath scheme in memory of their 13-year-old daughter, who died following a road accident.

Ian and Joy McCarthy, of Cronkshawfold Farm, Helmshore, have launched the Alden Access Challenge in memory of their daughter, Edith.

She received fatal head injuries when the family car left the road and ran down an embankment.

Her parents and 10-year-old sister Dorothy were also injured in the accident near Middlesbrough.

More than 80 fellow pupils and teachers from Haslingden High School attended her funeral at St Thomas' Musbury Church, Helmshore.

Her parents have launched a scheme to establish a community route in the Alden area where Edith was a keen walker and horse rider.

Ian said: "We are looking for groups and individuals to help us chart a community route in the Alden area.

"The aim is to explore and plot a circular path which ideally has potential to accommodate all members of the community, including horse riding and family cycling, and passes through different types of countryside and habitats.

Edith has been described by mum Joy as a bold girl, full of energy and love, with a great spark.

The couple hope the route will include paths, lanes, parks, green spaces and bridleways, and want to hear from anyone with ideas.

The deadline is October 19. Pathways included in the scheme will win special prizes.
