ARTIST Kelvin Burgoyne will be in the picture when he appears on TV show aimed at finding Britain's best watercolour painters.

Kelvin, of Percy Street, Nelson, was chosen to take part in Channel 4's Watercolour Challenge after researchers spotted his work at an exhibition.

Kelvin joined two other amateur artists at the National Tram Museum in Crich, Derbyshire, to be filmed for the show. The result will be broadcast on Channel 4 on October 12.

Watercolour Challenge, which is presented by Hannah Gordon, tests the skills of amateur artists in different venues across the country. Contestants are given four hours to paint the same scene and the show's resident art expert decides the winner.

Kelvin, who worked for the Prison Service before being injured at work and retiring on medical grounds, has been interested in painting all his life but with time to spare now he is concentrating on furthering his art career.

"We were filming for almost 12 hours and it was quite disconcerting to have a camera filming over your shoulder while you were trying to paint," he said.

"It was good fun, though, and I'm hoping the show will help promote my work."

All the contestants' paintings will form an exhibition in London at the end of November and Kelvin will feature in a book to be published to complement the series.

His work will also feature closer to home. The White Bull pub and restaurant, Gisburn, will hang his paintings for a month from October 4 for customers to see and buy.
