DANNY Megarity made a chilling statement of intent after he had apparently swallowed 210 diazepam tablets following a row with his mother, a court heard.

He sat on the settee at her home and said: "I am going to sit here and let you watch me die and then it will be on your conscience for the rest of your life."

But when police, called by his mother, roused Megarity they found it had been a cruel hoax and the tablets were in his pocket.

Megarity, 25, of Lincoln Road, Blackburn, admitted breach of the peace and was bound over in the sum of £150 to be of good behaviour for 12 months, by Blackburn magistrates.

Phillip Potter, prosecuting, said Megarity and his mother had argued and he had become agitated. He went to the bathroom and locked himself in for about 10 minutes.

"When he came out he called his mother 'a selfish bitch' before throwing at her 15 empty packets which had each contained 14 diazepam tablets," said Mr Potter.

"He ran down and started kicking the front door and put his fist through a window before returning to the living room and making the threat to let his mother watch him die."

Police were called and when they found Megarity asleep they sent for the ambulance. When Megarity woke he started swearing and lashed out at the officers.

Michael Blacklidge, defending, said Megarity had done a favour for his mother and felt it had been thrown back in his face.
