EMPLOYERS in hard-up former communist countries were turning their back on cash and paying workers in pints of Lancashire bitter.
Money problems and rising inflation in Russia and the Ukraine forced miners to accept food and other household items as part of their wages.
And that included beer exported by Blackburn-based Thwaites brewery.
