YOUR report on the A666 being dug up yet again (LET, September 23) reminds me of a story I once heard about 'The Lost Gold Mine of Blackburn.'
Apparently, many years ago, an old man was found dying. On him was a bag of gold nuggets.
he claimed to have struck it rich somewhere in Blackburn. Unfortunately, due to his condition, he couldn't remember just where. It was somewhere under a road or pavement, possibly on the A666 - was it on Craven's Brow or somewhere near the Infirmary?
He called it 'The Mucky Hole Mine,' but, sadly, he passed away before he could give the location...
Could this be the origin of '4,000 Holes in Blackburn, Lancashire' by the Beatles? Could this be why, in some areas, the same roads are dug up again and again?
We'll never know! they keep searching, under the guise of gas, electricity, cable companies, etc. You won't get them to admit they're really after the Mucky Hole Mine.
