A TOWN which once had the most boring postcards in Britain has proved it can be perfectly picturesque.

A postcard titled "Interesting Scenes Around Accrington" won a national competition to find Britain's most uninspiring views in the National Boring Postcard Competition eight years ago.

But Hyndburn Borough Council has now discovered plenty of picturesque places for a new set of eight cards by Barley photographer David Lyons, launched this week.

Marry Brooks, Accrington Information Centre manager, said: "This is a stunning set of postcards with lots of local views. Our old postcards had been taken some time ago and we felt they were a bit out of date.

"We wanted to show the area in the best light possible. The new flower arrangements and flower beds in particular have added so much colour to the area.

"We are sure there will be lots of demand coming up to Christmas as they're great to send to friends and family abroad to remind them of home."

The photographs include Hyndburn's historical architecture, from Accrington's imposing market hall to the pretty St James Church, Altham, as well as views of the area's heritage such as the coke ovens at Church and Huncoat's ancient stocks.

Marry said: "There's such a lot of history associated with Accrington as well as beautiful countryside. We have a lot to offer."

The pictures will be available from Accrington Information Centre in the Town Hall and local shops.
