WORLD number one snooker pro John Higgins says he needs to improve his game if he is to win a second Grand Prix title at Preston's Guild Hall.

Higgins, who has dropped to third place in the provisional Embassy World Rankings, says he didn't put enough work in ahead of his recent game against Ronnie O'Sullivan in the quarter-finals of the British Open. He was beaten 5-1.

And Higgins now says: "I've got to act quickly. I might get away with it playing against the lesser lights of the game but when the top ones like Ronnie come in, it is a different picture."

Although he admits he hasn't felt like working on his game of late, fans have little to worry about.

The last time he developed a similar symptom, Higgins returned to the practice table with a vengeance before going on to win the German and British Opens, the Liverpool Victoria Challenge and the big one, the Embassy World Crown.

He also moved to the top of the rankings, ousting Stephen Hendry from first place after his great rival had spent a record eight seasons in pole position.

Higgins added: "I suppose I haven't done badly this season in reaching the final stages but I want to do better that that and win something. I want to do it in Preston."

Higgins' first match in Preston is set to be televised on Saturday, October 16, when he faces Jimmy Michie, Mehmet Husnu or Nick Pearce.
