WHO says local government is boring? Not New Longton lad David Halstead, who has just finished a fortnight's work experience learning about how South Ribble Borough Council operates.
The 15-year-old, in his final year at Priory High School, Penwortham, thought he would be typing and filing for fortnight.
But when he arrived at the Civic Centre, he was given an unexpected duty - to accompany the borough's mayor, Councillor Mrs Margaret Smith.
He joined the mayor on her engagements last Thursday, including a visit to Balshaws High School, Church Road, Leyland, where Coun Smith was guest of honour at an industry seminar for pupils.
Mayor's attendant David Claringbull showed him the ropes, which include opening the door for the mayor, announcing her arrival at functions, and attaching the civic flag to the front of the mayoral car.
David said: "When I arrived on work experience, I thought it would be boring.
"But it has been really interesting. I really enjoyed going out with the mayor on engagements."
He added: "I have also helped process taxi licence documents and sat in on council meetings, which were fascinating."
David's placement was within the support services division of the council, learning primarily about matters such as electoral registration, committee administration and information technology.
Coun Smith said: "David was a charming lad and I enjoyed my time with him immensely.
"He was polite and considerate and did the job very well."
