A LAST minute equaliser by England International Vicky Turner gave King Edward and Queen Mary 1st XI a well deserved draw in their opening match of the hockey season.

Kerry Hunt led the inexperienced Lytham side well as they entertained a strong Newcastle Under Lyme team.

After leading 1-0 at half-time, Lytham fell behind before a tremendous finish took them to a 3-3 draw.

Strengthened by the return of Karen Lowe, Lytham gave a good account of themselves against the touring Australian side from Perth Methodist College.

The 5-3 defeat reflected some spirited Lytham play in the second half with Amanda Stevenson, Turner and skipper Hunt outstanding.

Lytham coach Clare Huggon was delighted with the performance.

"I thought we battled well," she said, "and the team spirit was excellent.

"It was a very promising start."
