JOHN Blunt (LET, September 22), is quite correct to point out the ridiculous situation regarding motorists being prosecuted for being a few miles an hour over the speed limit.
The vast majority who do exceed (and be honest, who hasn't?) are breaking the law, but cause no harm or damage, either to themselves or any other road user or pedestrians.
However, there is no doubt that every murderer, rapist, mugger and burglar, while also breaking the law, will at the very least cause great distress to at least one person and, quite often, many more.
By all means, punish those who drive recklessly and dangerously. And, unfortunately, accidents will still happen even if everyone drove at or below the legal limit.
But I'd much rather see a bobby arresting a burglar than booking a bloke who has been doing 5mph over the limit and has not damaged a dickie bird.
