I WAS one of the few people who took the trouble to vote in the European elections in May. The results a few days later gave the names of those people selected under the rules of proportional representation, who would 'serve us.'
Since then, apart from one letter from Liberal Democrat Chris Davies in your newspaper, there has been no contact whatsoever from any one of our MEPs of any political party.
Fewer than five months after the election, I have failed to find anyone who can give me the name of more than one North West MEP and no-one seems to know whether all the regional MEPs represent all of us or whether each has been allocated a geographical area or each has been given specific responsibilities.
No-one knows how or where to contact them or which issues they might be pursuing.
It is clearly a case of serving the masters rather than representing the public. In fact, our newly-elected MEPs have disappeared into total obscurity.
The turnout for the 1999 election may have been extremely disappointing for the Government, but unless communications with the public improve dramatically it will be even lower next time.
JENNIFER M MORTIMER (Mrs), Green Drive, Clitheroe.
