LANCASTER police launched an investigation into a car crash at Yealand Redmayne which resulted in the death of a 38-year-old woman.

Ling Wang from Lancaster Road in Slyne-with-Hest died shortly after the crash on the A6 at 9.20 on Monday night.

Her Ford Escort was in collision with a Vauxhall Astra near Cinder Barrow Lane at Yealand just north of Carnforth. The Astra was driven by Amanda Fishwick, 20, of Milnthorpe who was taken to the RLI with slight injuries.

Early investigations indicated that Mrs Wang's car was travelling south and Miss Fishwick was travelling north when they collided.

Lancaster paramedics announced Mrs Wang dead at the scene before taking her to the mortuary. Ambulancemen from Cumbria also attended and took Miss Fishwick to the Lancaster hospital.

One paramedic commented: "We were called at about 9.30pm. We have to complete a number of checks before we can say someone's life is extinct."

Firefighters from Carnforth also attended along with incident support teams from Lancaster. The crews cleared the wreckage and made the area safe.

Inspector Steve Baines of Lancashire Police made an appeal for witnesses of the crash. He said: "We are asking for witnesses to come forward as soon as they possibly can. Anyone who witnessed this should call Lancaster police on 63333."

Lancaster police are also investigating a discovery of a body in a city centre car park. Mark Hemingway of Kendal was found the Mitre House car park near the social security building in the city centre. A police spokesman said there were no suspicious circumstances.
