MEMBERS of St Helens Sutton AC took part in the Merseyside County Road Relay championships in Liverpool under good conditions for fast running.
Best turnout and performances came in the races for the combined intermediates, junior and senior women. held over three laps of 3,000 metres.
First up for the club's A team was Pam Fitzsimons who finished in fifth place with a time of 14min 39secs. Despite a disappointing 15min 12secs, Louise Casey moved the club up to fourth, a position retained by Holly O'Connor who ran the club's fastest time of 13min 52secs.
First leg for the B team star lady veteran, Cecilia Fitzsimons who ran the remarkably fast time of 15min 33secs to bring the team home in sixth place. This was maintained by Laura Clayton and Pam Appleton in 16min 16secs and 16min 29secs respectively.
The under 13 years girls team were led off by Jodi Nelson who ran the team's fastest time of 7min 21secs for the 2,000 metres to finish in fourth position. Second leg was Liz McNally who recorded 8min 14sec as the team fell back to fifth position. Despite Gemma Clayton running 8min 0secs she was unable to make up any places. Catherine Fitzhenry had a baptism of fire. In her first-ever open competitive event, she ran a commendable 8min 35secs.
The under 15 years boys team also ran over 2,000 metres. Stephen Thompson was the club's fastest in this group running the first leg in 6min 19secs, for fifth place. Next up Paul McNally ran a pleasing 6min 54secs but was unable to improve the position, but Luke Benyon's time of 7min 1sec took the club to fourth spot.
Club members also took part in the Corporate Cup 5km charity run around the town centre. Four made up the Glass Town Harriers team with newcomer Gareth Price first home in an excellent 16min 51secs for the winding course, five seconds ahead of Andy O'Connor. Andy Boyack ran 19min 13sec and Cecilia Fitzsimons had a personal best time for the distance of 21min 53secs. as they finished fourth of the charity teams. Another three members joined with Michael Parkes, 22min 30secs, to make up the ST Group Plodders team. Ever-improving Lynne McEvoy ran 23min 58secs, Phil Skerry 24min 58sec, and Diane Appleton 25min 27secs.
