PLANS for a new community centre at Thatto Heath, part funded by European cash, have been approved by councillors.
St Helens Council's Planning Committee has agreed to the erection of a single-storey, L-shaped building on land bordered by Elephant Lane and Dunedin Street but has imposed strict conditions on design details and limits on the hours of operation.
Members heard that some local residents had opposed the scheme because, they feared, it would attract anti-social behaviour and cause highway dangers.
But councillors felt the project - submitted by the Europe-backed Pathways group - would benefit the area as a whole providing a local learning centre with computer facilities, creche facilities, and a range of activities for young and old alike.
The centre will consist of three meeting rooms, a play area, a communal meeting space and the usual support facilities and car parking.
