SPECIAL arrangements had to be made after the first St Helens Corporate Cup race ended in a dead heat.

The cut glass trophy was presented to both the post Office Penny Blacks and Liverpool John Moores University Arc Animals who finished with identical accumulated times of one hour 11 minutes 28 seconds. But they won't have to share the trophy - a replica is being specially commissioned so they can have one each.

More than 400 took part in the five-kilometre (3.1 mile) event around the town centre.

Fastest team was the K.I.N.D. runners who ran a staggering one hour six minutes and 14 seconds - more than five minutes faster than the overall winners and the best-ever time for the charity shield division.

As they did not represent the same organisation they ran on behalf of the local charity, Kids in Need and Distress, and are the St Helens Charity Shield winners. A cheque for £100 goes to K.I.N.D.

Division Two winners were HMP Liverpool Walton Breakaway with an overall time of one hour 36 minutes and 25 seconds.

First man to finish was Kevin Usher of Warrington Borough Council in 15 minutes 33 seconds and first woman home was Emma Ford from Ensign Flag Company in 17 minutes 30 seconds.

Mayor of St Helens, Councillor Pat Jackson, took part in the event on a walking basis to raise money for her annual appeal which is supporting the creation of the Lady Mavis Pilkington Millennium Centre.

She finished the course in around 43 minutes and commented: "It was OK but my legs felt like jelly at the end of it."

Proceeds from the event will be donated to Macmillan Cancer Relief.
