HOSPITAL beds could have become a thing of the past in East Lancashire with patients having to travel out of the area for operations.
And local casualty departments might have been scrapped in favour of large regional specialist trauma units many miles away.
The prospect of East Lancashire having no main hospitals was met with strong protests at a major conference to discuss the future of health care in the area.
